Summaries
Wyoming Elk Hunt Planning
Jaden discussed hunting plans with Tyler, Tanner, and Trevor for an upcoming elk hunt in Wyoming's South Region. They explored different hunting strategies, including glassing, calling, and wallow sitting, and discussed the logistics of transportation and camping. Jaden recommended using a 4-wheeler instead of a trailer for better mobility and suggested setting up in a triangle formation for calling. The group agreed on hunting dates between September 15-24, avoiding the full moon period. They also discussed the varied terrain and potential for both open sagebrush and forested areas.
Archery Elk Hunting Strategy and Itinerary
Jaden presented a detailed itinerary and hunting plan for an area with no wilderness in the northern half, focusing on a specific mountain section. He explained the strategy of starting low and working high, noting that elk often frequent aspen pockets and that corner crossing is now legal in the area due to court decisions. Jaden emphasized the importance of wind direction and positioning to intercept elk movements, suggesting that hunters could glass from the road one night and approach from different sides the next morning.
Elk Hunting Strategies in Pennock Mountain
Jaden discussed hunting strategies in a specific mountain area, focusing on glassing techniques and understanding elk behavior. He explained that elk frequent the area around Pennock Mountain, particularly in the basins and timber pockets, and suggested a loop approach to maximize visibility and minimize pack-out difficulty. Jaden noted that while Deer Creek has water and attracts elk, the backside of the area can be challenging to access, but it offers good elk habitat with minimal hunting pressure until rifle season. Tanner and Tyler agreed that getting off the beaten path was a priority, and Jaden confirmed that mature bulls could be found in the area..
Kennedy Peak Hunting Strategies
Jaden discussed hunting strategies for Kennedy Peak and surrounding areas, emphasizing the use of fishing hole pins to mark promising spots. He advised a mobile approach, focusing on glassing and calling in the low country, and suggested short, strategic hunts in the high country due to thin air and rocky terrain. Jaden also highlighted the importance of considering thermal patterns and wind direction, and recommended hunting midweek to avoid recreational traffic.
Rifle Elk Hunting Season Strategy
Jaden advised starting elk hunting in low areas and working up, particularly focusing on areas with bugling bulls. He recommended either arriving 3 days early for the rifle opener or coming 4-5 days after to hunt during potential winter weather. Jaden noted that the first few days of rifle season can be productive, with bugling bulls often present, but hunting becomes more challenging after the opener.
Hunt Timing Discussion
Jaden and Tyler discussed hunting strategies, focusing on the importance of timing and duration for optimal success. Jaden recommended spending at least 7 days hunting, emphasizing the impact of weather changes and rut timing. They agreed that breaking up the trip with rest periods or changing locations could be beneficial. Tyler shared a friend's approach of taking shorter, more frequent trips, which Jaden supported as a viable strategy.
Hunting Logistics and Equipment Planning
The group discussed hunting logistics and equipment needs for an upcoming hunt. Jaden advised on using binoculars and spotting scopes in different terrain conditions, recommending free-hand binoculars for thick areas and a spotting scope for open areas. They discussed the challenges of long drives and the varying shot opportunities in different locations. Tyler and Tanner considered bringing a side-by-side vehicle, but were unsure about the decision. Jaden agreed to add more hunt locations to his map for their reference.
Hunting Trip Safety and Planning
Jaden advised Tyler and Tanner on planning their hunting trip, emphasizing the importance of using a truck or side-by-side for transportation due to the challenging roads. He suggested moving camp every time they travel more than an hour from the main area and warned about the dangers of setting up camp near beetle-kill trees. Jaden also recommended bringing fishing rods to catch golden trout and brookies in the upper lakes, and provided guidance on hunting elk, including setting up a triangular formation and considering wind direction.
