RECOMMENDATION: GRIZZLY RIFLE

PROS:

Low tag numbers and a good chunk of public lands make this unit a quality hunt in rifle seasons. Plus, there is still an over-the-counter archery elk season in this unit, meaning you can come back to it year after year while building points to return with a rifle. It’s generally pretty thick, and the best glassing terrain is on the edges and up high, but there is enough elk here to make it a really fun hunt. Plus, it’s close enough to your in-laws in Bend you can come here regularly in the off-season to learn it before your hunt kicks off.

CONS:

You will have to get creative with your hunting approach to find the bachelor groups of bulls that will hang out up high longer. Additionally, you may feel like you are “leaving points on the table” but the next tier of rifle elk hunts are another 2+ years away from drawing.
