YOUR UTAH ELK HUNT PLAN

Early Rifle OTC ELk | South Slope Yellowstone Unit

Consider These Tactics:

  • Hike in the dark to get to glassing knobs on time

  • Key in on steepest country for elk herds that have been pressured

  • Time storms for good glassing and elk movement

Important Notes:

  • These units can be busy

  • Big optics are highly recommended

  • Use hunter pressure to your advantage

DAY EXAMPLE ITINERARY

October 5, 2025 | Altamont, UT

MORNING GAME PLAN

Wake Up: 5:30 AM

Start Hiking: 6:30 AM

Aim for 2 miles per hour hiking to identified feature; glassing knob, wallow, meadow, etc.

Listen & Call For Bugles In the Dark

Sit and Glass By: 7:00 AM

SUNRISE IS 7:22 AM

Stick with Glassing Knob: 7:00-9:45 AM

Check likely pockets for elk. Wait to see if any move in from other hunters

Move to New Glassing Knob or Still Hunt: 9:45–12:00 PM

Eat Lunch and Take Nap: 12:00 PM–2:00 PM


EVENING GAME PLAN

Check Bedding Areas for Elk Sign Near Glassing Knob: 3:00 PM

Sitting and Glassing: 5:00-7:30 PM

Check likely pockets for elk. Don’t cover many miles.

SUNSET IS 6:56 PM

Hike Back to Camp: 7:30 PM.

Dinner: 9:00 PM

Sleep: 10:00 PM to 5:30 AM

Wake up and check the area again the following morning, then change camp locations.

After a max of 2 different backpack camp sites, consider backing out to the pickup and changing locations middle of the day to be in position for the next evening.
