Gear Recommendations

Go simple. Go light. It’s important not to get married to one particular hunting spot and your gear should enable you to be mobile, not tie you down to one location. Here are some of the essentials to be thinking about on your trip.

Average Montana September Temps: High - 64 Degrees | Low - 37 Degrees

  • While grizzly bears are not common, they are possible in all of your hunt areas. When hunting grizzly bear areas, I recommend both bear spray and a sidearm you can shoot well.

    My configuration looks like:

    • Bear Spray on Bino Harness

    • S&W 9MM on Backpack Belt

  • I prefer a tipi style tent with two guys for both at the truck and for backpacking. One center pole and stakes make it pack small and easy to pitch.

I use the Absaroka 4P tent (seen here) for these kinds of hunts with two people.

  • While a spotting scope might not be necessary, a good set of 10×42 binoculars, a tripod, and a way to attach them are highly recommended.

    My set up includes:

    • Maven B1 10×42

    • Tricer BC Tripod

    • Tricer LP Head

    • Inexpensive Amazon Bino Attachment
